Call for Papers - Focus Theme: Webscience in Medicine

Guest Editors: Kerstin Denecke, Elizabeth Brooks

The web has grown to play a significant role in the lives of many, also in health care. This leads to the question of whether health provision and education can benefit from the web, and can create an environment in which individuals and communities become more able and responsible for their own health and treatment. Web Science is a new interdisciplinary field targeting at understanding what the Web is, engineering its future and ensuring its social benefit. Given these developments several questions arises: Does the Web have the potential to provide solutions that address aspects of health care problems? How can we make use of medical web data as new source of information within information gaining contexts?

The research community becomes increasingly aware of new possibilities and research challenges related to the medical Web. Language peculiarities, content diversity, streaming nature of this specific data poses many challenges given the increasing content on the Web and the tradeoff of filtering noise at the cost of losing information which is potentially relevant. Further, the processes of information gathering make several demands that need to be considered in research as well. Specifically, the Focus Theme Issue will focus on the following areas:
• Analysis of medical web data,
• Event detection and information extraction from the medical web,
• Personalization in health application,
• Evaluation of health web services and applications, and
• Mobile healthcare applications.
